POPULAR DIRECTORS OF THRILLER GENRE

    POPULAR DIRECTORS OF THRILLER GENRE

A film director is a person who directs the making of a film. Generally, a film director controls a film's artistic and dramatic aspects, and visualizes the script while guiding the technical crew and actors in the fulfillment of that vision. The director has a key role in choosing the cast members, production design, and the creative aspects of filmmaking. In some European countries, the director is viewed as the author of the film.
And some of he great and well known authors like these in thriller genre are -:

1.Christopher Nolan Best known for his cerebral, often nonlinear story-telling, acclaimed writer-director Christopher Nolan was born on July 30, 1970 in London, England. Over the course of 15 years of film-making, Nolan has gone from low-budget independent films to working on some of the biggest blockbusters ever made. Like The Batman Series , Inception and alot great thrillers.

   2. Roman Polanski  is a Polish film director, producer, writer and actor. Having made films in Poland, Britain, France and the USA, he is considered one of the few truly international filmmakers.
3.Martin Scorsese his long-cherished project, Gangs Of New York (2002), earned numerous critical honors, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Director; the Howard Hughes biopic The Aviator (2004) won five Academy Awards, in addition to the Golden Globe and BAFTA awards for Best Picture. Scorsese won his first Academy Award for Best Director for The Departed (2006),

GENERIC CONVENTIONS OF A THRILLER

                GENERIC CONVENTIONS OF A THRILLER

There are many features that characterise the thriller genre.
Here is a list with an explanation of various thriller conventions within a thriller mise-en-scene:

Lighting: Noir lighting (black on white) / ambient/ chiaroscuro lighting.
Most dangerous scenes take place at night because the bewildered nighttime and dark areas increase the feeling of danger and suspense (i.e. in Thelma and Louise and Jackie Brown).
Sometimes though (Heavenly Creatures/Essex Boys) murder or violent scenes happen in broad daylight instead. This adds surprise to the violence and could sometimes even add more thrill and horror, because it is so unsuspected. (People usually feel safer in daylight, so a murder at that time could be more shocking. For example, When one of the gangsters in Jackie Brown unexpectedly shoots the blonde girl in the middle of the car park in broad daylight with such a casual attitude can have quite a shocking effect on the audience.)

Camera angles: Long shots establish the environment the scene takes place in. Sometimes the director wants the audience to know, sometimes he doesn't. If he doesn't, the director uses more close-ups so the audience concentrates and possibly even identifies and empathises with one certain character.

Locations: Generic thriller locations are usually enclosed areas which add a sense of claustrophobia with no escape, no way out for the character in panic situations. Car parks are also very commonly used in thrillers (Thelma and Louise/Essex Boys). Other locations used in thriller films are plain, bewildered locations (gangster gets shot in boot of car in Jackie Brown) situated in the middle of nowhere.
In Essex Boys, for example, the beaten up character is helplessly left to rot in the mud in the middle of nowhere - Here, the terror is added because there is not much chance that anyone will come across him there to help him and so he will probably end up dying in a horrible condition.
Thriller locations are very unglamorous and surrounded by pale or dark colours .

Props
Weapons
Usually weapons are often used. Many main characters in a thriller own a gun or a knife. If they do not own a typical weapon, they tend to use items (whose purpose aren't originally to harm someone with) as weapons. For example glass vases, baseball bats, high heel shoes, stones etc.
White vans are often used in thrillers. They are very enigmatic, because anything could be hidden inside. Plain white -> faceless -> Enigma.

Characters
Thrillers mostly focus on illegal, dangerous or "wrong" behaviour, usually involving characters that are gangsters, part of the mafia, spies, detectives or any kind of murderers.
Sometimes, important key characters are complete enigmas, about whom the audience doesn't find out much information. Some of these enigmas get cleared up at the end of a film, but sometimes the character stays mysterious and one never finds out their actual identity.

Femme fatale
A femme fatale (french: fatal woman) is a strong, independent woman (maybe a gangsters wife, for example) who contradicts the sexist stereotype of a weak wife, good for nothing other than cleaning, cooking and taking care of children.
She looks beautiful like a stereotypical woman but acts strong like a stereotypical man . For example, a femme fatale would be wearing red lipstick, pearl earrings and a beautiful dress, under which she hides a gun or a knife.

Sub genre of thriller

                      Types Of Thriller

Horror thrillers such as Final Destination appeal more to young adults and               teenagers. At first I thought thrillers were more catered to young adults rather than adults; however when I looked at all the thrillers I have watched in the past, they all have been cross genres; but actual thriller movies are more for older adults as it demands intellectual thinking and there is usually more violence, blood and sex.
  • Psychological Thrillers• The suspect does not use physical strength, but uses psychology to get to their victim.• The suspense created by psychological thrillers often comes from two or more characters battling against each others minds, either by playing deceptive games with the other or by merely trying to demolish the others mental state.• This type of thriller usually requires more intellectual thinking therefore 25+ year olds are more likely to watch these types of thrillers.

  • Crime Thrillers• Crime thrillers are thrillers that have a focus point of breaking the law• The police are shown in large amount in crime thrillers• In most crime thrillers the villains are normally criminals• A good example is the Godfather
  • Romantic Thrillers• The story is usually relationship based with an aspect of a thriller in it.• Not too many of these type of thrillers are made as it is hard to come up with the plot and may confuse the audience.• However; these types of thrillers are Female dominated. An example of this type of thriller is True romance
  • Supernatural Thrillers• Has a supernatural element to the thriller genre.• Usually involves a twists into the plot, often the hero/ main character has some kind of psychic ability.• This type of thriller is usually watched by female audience. An example of a supernatural thriller is The sixth sense.
  • Action Thrillers• All action thrillers have scenes of violence throughout the film weather if is hand to hand combats to guns and car chases• There are also more blood in scenes to show the dramatic effect to the violence

THRILLER

                                         THRILLER

Thrillers for example Memento usually appeal to adults or sometimes young adults. Thriller films are viewed by most audiences especially teenagers who enjoy the action, twists, suspense etc. Male and females are both able to enjoy the plot of a thriller and our thriller contains the element of suspense as the antagonists are anonyms. This will automatically interest both teenage girls and boys.

Some great example of best thriller movies of all time are -:
  1. Pulp Fiction (1994)  :  The film was nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture Tarantino and Avary won for Best Original Screenplay.

2. The Dark Knight (2008) :The film received eight Academy Award nominations; it won the award for Best Sound Editing and Ledger was posthumously awarded Best Supporting Actor.
3. The Departed (2006) : It won several awards, including four Oscars at the 79th Academy AwardsBest PictureBest Director (Scorsese), Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film Editing. Wahlberg was nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
